The Issues Facing Hoke County Schools & How We Can Fix Them

STUDENTS FIRST:

The truth is hard to swallow, but Hoke County High School is ranked #9,777 in the National Rankings. Also, data from North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI), shows the undeniable fact that the Hoke County Public School System is failing students. The current test scores for our high school students show that 84 of every 100 students are below expected math proficiency levels. The scores for English are similarly poor with 55 of every 100 students not meeting proficiency expectations. It is time to reestablish accountability and refocus the school district toward properly educating our children. It’s time to take a serious look at our priorities and get back to investing in education. Our children’s future depends on it.

PARENTS ALWAYS:

Parents have the right to be included in ALL matters pertaining to school. Under the pretense of COVID rules, parents continue to be denied entry to the classroom during school hours. It is time to get back to normal and allow parents back into the classroom to be involved in their children’s educational journey. Every parent has the right to know, and see, exactly what their children are being taught. After all, students belong to their parents and not to the school system nor the state.

SUPPORT TEACHERS:

To address our learning issues, our school district needs to acknowledge and commit to combating the ‘teacher retainment’ issues. Our teachers need increased pay that is comparable to our surrounding areas and increased support in the classrooms. One thing COVID exposed was how overworked and over tasked our teachers are. This needs to change. If we are to expect our teachers to teach, we must support them to do that which they trained for, teach. We need to incentivize our teachers to want to invest in our children in Hoke School District for the long haul. Ruben Castellon for Hoke County Board of Education.  Students First Parents Always!
